Roaches fly
This is a question that we can ask but we don’t really want to know the answer to it. It is bad enough to know that these creepy crawlers are running about in our kitchens, under our cupboards without having to duck because they can fly. But still, the question remains: do roaches fly?
The answer is no, not all cockroaches fly. The German cockroach surely can’t fly but with the American one the situation is different. The American roach can’t really fly either. Even though both sexes have wings, they can’t really use them for active flight; they can only glide from point to point. But how can you tell a cockroach is American or German so you will know witch will fly and witch won’t? Well, the American roach is about 40mm long and has a red and brown hue while the German roach is considerably smaller being only 12 to 18 mm long and having a light brown color with two dark brown stripes just below it’s head. The one cockroach that you will surely never see flying around in your apartment is the Oriental roach. It only has partial wing pads and wings so it is not able to fly. Woods and Smoky Brown cockroaches, witch live outdoors, do fly, or at least the male Smoky roach does. It can fly from tree to tree and it can even get indoors if it has the opportunity. These roaches usually get inside a house to feed on trash that is improperly contained or pet food. The International Cockroach Association says that the Woods roach is a very strong flyer and it reaches maturity in June or July. During this period it may fly to lights on buildings and crawl inside of them. These are the roaches you may see flying next to your TV during the night. These are the roaches you will see most of the time but there are over 3000 species of roaches in the world and 50 in the US alone.
So what if some roaches can fly? If you look at the bright side of the things you will realize that cockroaches that can fly don’t stay that much in the disgusting corners of an unclean kitchen. So next time you see a flying roach don’t freak out and think at the possibility that it just might fly out the way it came!
